We built an impenetrable fort!

We’ve had such fun this week, we’ve been helping mummy a lot and making sure that Millie can’t get hurt again.

This week mummy has been going completely crazy out on our balcony. she was out there every day making strange noises and everything smelt strange too. Sometimes we were allowed out with her, sometimes we had to supervise from inside. I really couldn’t figure out what she was doing, I was so curious I just had to ask her. “We’ll Jenny, we had blindie proofed the balcony when you arrived but now we need to take it to the next level and Millie proof it.” Soon she’ll be fully healed and as daddy and I know how much you girls like spending time outside we’ve got to make sure the balcony it’s extra safe so she can’t fall off again.”

First she took a load of noisy, clanky bits of metal out there, then she moved everything around – seriously confusing for a blindie – and then she started doing something that made raspy, kind of swooshing noises. She said it was something called sanding. I didn’t really like it so I supervised from the safety of the indoor cat tree by the door, Millie and Angelin went out to help. Mummy seemed to like them helping as she kept saying ‘oh girls you’re being so helpful’ Daddy says this is something called sarcasm. Well as a cat I don’t get sarcasm and neither do Millie and Angelin so they carried on helping mummy as much as they could.

They were out there for ages making the same noise over and over. Then eventually I could hear mummy moving things around again, so I went out to find out what was going on. I tried to find the usual route up onto the table for a better view, up onto the chair and then up onto the…wait where’s it gone? “Hang on Jen” mummy said “I’ve turned it upside down so I can use it to hold the posts but you can’t stay out here when I do it otherwise you’ll get spray painted.” Well, I wanted to explore, moving things around might upset my mind map but it also presents new challenges and new things to explore. Not fair mummy!

So we all go evicted from the balcony whilst mummy kept going in and out with her stinky spray paint. It made a strange noise and rattled a lot. We were quite happy to be inside for this as it wasn’t very pleasant at all and each time she came back in she didn’t smell like mummy but smelt of chemical. After what seemed like ages mummy decided that it was all ready and we were allowed back outside again.

Then a couple of days later at the weekend she went out with lots more stuff and was banging and clanking and being very noisy. Of course we all went out to help again. I didn’t like the noisy bits but then there was string to play with and stuff that mummy was moving around on the floor which we all wanted to chase and catch. This was a fun game but probably more fun for us than mummy as she kept telling us to let go of the string as she was trying to use it. But mummy I meowed “it makes such tempting noises!” She really should know better by now.

We were all so helpful I think we made mummy feel really embarrassed at her ineptitude and so she told us all to go indoors and wouldn’t let us back out until she had finished. Then I heard the door open and she said to daddy that we could all go out and look at her handiwork – her handiwork! But it was us who did all the helping and supervising to make sure she did it right. Still we all traipsed out to have a look and tell her what a good mummy she was and what a good job she had done. It was that night that Millie was allowed out for the first time since her accident without being supervised. I think she’s still a bit scared of being outside in the dark, she was ok when mummy was out there with us in the daytime but when we went out together in the evening once it was dark it was only for about 5 minutes before she shouted to come back in again! I guess it will take her a bit of time to get over what happened to her and learn to enjoy being out there again. Still we’re all here to help her and I don’t mind as I love being out there by myself in the evening listening quietly to the nature outside. It’s my calm place to go if I get up tight or anxious about anything.

Of course we were all very pleased at our days work but it was very tiring having to help mummy so much so we spent the evening chilling out on mummy laps for a well earned nap after a hard days work. Well done mummy.

Now we’ve got an impenetrable fortress daddy says this is the last step to get Millie fully healed and back to her usual self. As she is in the last few weeks of healing mummy and daddy have packed away the cage and instead of being locked up in it overnight Millie has been allowed through with us. She’s still not ready for full climbing and jumping so every night our food and water gets moved into the hallway and when mummy and daddy go to bed the living room door is closed. When this first happened I was confused but daddy explained “I’m sorry Jenny, I know you like to be able to climb the tall scratching posts at night to sleep at the top but Millies ankle can’t yet take the impact if she jumps from high up and as all the tall trees are in the living room we can’t have free range everywhere just yet. During the day we’re here to get her down if she climbs up high.” This kind of makes sense as there’s nothing really tall in the bedrooms and I suppose at least we can then be all together at night as a family. I think this has helped mummy too as Millie has taken to snuggling with mummy on her pillow some nights like Peppar used to.
